California Part 2

….As I mentioned at the end of my last post we had hit Sea World on the Saturday. We decided to take the Sunday off and relax at the beach house. It was the best day for weather while at this place and we needed a down day. A little sun, sand, waves, pool – pretty nice if you ask me.

Monday we headed out for the San Diego Zoo. It was pretty impressive as far as zoos go. Outside of their Polar Bears, their zoo is just in a better climate than ours and MUCH larger. The animals can be outside all the time, unlike our Calgary Zoo. Zoos are still tough for me as was Sea World, but they really stress the rescued animals as their tenants. Seeing some new animals like their Koala and Panda exhibition was pretty cool and their Ambassador companion program was also really interesting – They pair dogs with Cheetahs at birth to form a bond.

After the Zoo, we headed back for a nice meal at the beach house. Because we took Sunday “Off” we had to make a decision on what we were going to cut out. We decided to chop the Safari Park. We just did the zoo and even though the kids liked it, we figured they would have enjoyed LEGOLAND more than the Safari Park. Plus, the safari park has some great Safari Tours in addition to your ticket, but they are allowed only for 8 and up. Audrey would not have be able to go.

So Tuesday we headed out to LEGOLAND. It is certainly not as impressive as Disneyland and it could use some upkeep, but it has some pretty cool stuff. The Miniland area with the Star Wars feature was awesome. It is a theme park that is geared to kids under 12. The rides were fun, but not all that thrilling. Although at days end we did decide to go on the Pirate’s Reef ride. This wasn’t so much a ride as it was a dunk tank. When we got up to go on it, the carnie says your going to get wet from head to toe. Half our family backed out at that point! BOO!! But yep that is exactly what happened. Log ride up, make a turn and go crashing into water. And it wasn’t the first wave that gets you, its the tidal wave that comes from behind that really does you in. WE WERE SOAKED! But it was fun none the less and made for a soggy drive home.

Wednesday we checked out of the Beach house 😦 , but I would definitely stay here again . We headed back to LEGOLAND as we didn’t have a full day Tuesday and so with Wednesday, it was enough time to see everything. After LEGOLAND, we drove back up to Anaheim to check into our house close to Disneyland (We broke up the Disneyland trip). We still had another day on our 5-day park hopper pass for Thursday and we were also looking at going again Friday as one of favourite rides was re-opening that day – Pirates of the Caribbean!

We woke up Thursday morning and heading to the Parks. We stayed mostly on the Disneyland side as we had a lunch reservation at the Blue Bayou. You pretty much have to have reservations for this place. Its the restaurant inside of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. I couldn’t even get a dinner rezo, had to go with a lunch, but it was still pretty cool inside. The menu is definitely geared to a dinner offering as well. HOWEVER, the best part of our lunch was we overheard a server talking to a customer that Pirates of the Caribbean was likely doing a soft opening today. NO WAY!? So we stuck around close that afternoon and as we were walking in that direction we noticed people lining up and we jumped in and went for a Pirate ride. MADE OUR DAY! Not only that, it saved us over $1000 as we no longer really needed to go back on the Friday now. YEP, we would have spent the money just to do Pirates of the Caribbean and so thank-you Disneyland, you made our day and kept us a little more flush! 🙂

Friday we stuck around and had pool time and then did some mini golfing and enjoyed a nice family dinner. Saturday was another pool day and then Renee, myself, Carly and Neil (my sister and brother in law) headed to the LA Angels baseball game. Ah…baseball, I really couldn’t be in a much better setting. I am able to let my guard down here and just enjoy being at the ballpark. Peanuts, Hot Dogs, Garlic Fries and Beer – I did it all and it was fantastic! It was a great game and went into extra innings although Kansas City ended up winning in the top of the 13th. After the game we headed for a bite at JT Schmid’s. It was a brew pub right beside Angels stadium and the Honda Centre. We sat on the patio and our bartender was great. Food – average, but they had some nice craft beers. I would go here again if visiting these stadiums and avoid the spicy wings eh Neil??

Sunday was our last day and we decided to head to Downtown Disney to return our rental cars a day earlier and my Sister and Niece wanted to do some shopping. I like walking through Downtown Disney, but on this day we went from Hero to Zero in a week. Last week we were staying at the Grand Californian with passes to Disneyland in our pockets. Sunday, we were just a bunch of teenage mallrats with no where to go! Ha ha ha. The rest of the day we just hung around the house, playing games and swimming in the pool. It was a nice updated home and we could walk to Disneyland in about 20mins. Would stay here again, but there are a lot of homes similar to this.

Monday was travel day home and a good bye to a trip that I wish didn’t have to end. Having my family close like that was pretty special. It makes me smile and choke up at the same time. Attached a few pictures. Still trying to work out the media thing on this so they are just random.

Disneyland was magical as it always is, but the heat wave California had last week really saps the energy. It was in the 40’s Wed,Thurs and Friday was pretty close. Couple that with the EXTREME crowd on our last day we were happy to move on to the next part of our trip.

We had checked in last Tuesday and the parks were quite quiet (for Disneyland) and then each day got a little busier with Friday being the busiest I have ever seen it. It was Grad Night, so I think every teenager in Anaheim was at the park.

Obviously I enjoyed everything, but the highlights for me were California Screamin, Radiator Racers, Space Mountain and Star Tours. But the best moment for me was watching the World of Color. For those unfamiliar, it is a water and light show timed with the music and video of various Disney movies. It was a half hour long and I think touched every emotion for me. It was a moment that I didn’t want to end. I wanted to crawl into it and live there with all my family and friends. If you go to Disneyland make this a priority, but make a reservation for the dining package at Wine Country Trattoria and you get premium passes to watch the show.

Disneyland does make you feel like a kid again. But watching the excitement from Audrey and my niece and nephew really makes the day.  They each had their favorites being different ages but as kids are, they were up for anything. So special to see and they are so close they may as well all be siblings.

We checked out Saturday morning and drove down the coast and spent the day at Sea World. It was my first time to Sea World and I didn’t realize what Sea World was. I thought it was just like a bigger version of the Vancouver Aquarium. Wow was I wrong! It was an amusement park with sea animals. It was a nice change from Disneyland even though I have mixed feelings about it. **My opinion – Dolphin show was cool, Shamu show was not. Penguin exhibit in Calgary crushed theirs. As far as their aquarium exhibits, Vancouver and Boston were better. Stingray touch pool was good, Boston was better. Feeding the Sea Lions was cool and being that close to the Dolphins was awesome!  (That’s my 10 second review…)

After Sea World we drove back up the coast to the town of Encinitas where we rented a beach house. Very cool place and definitely a surfing community. I think we just walked into the set of Point Break. “Utah, get me two!”

We ordered pizza when we got in and the staff were incredibly friendly. I think they may have all been smoking the left handed cigarette and if you can visualize the stereotype of a “surfer” you would be spot on. Loved it!

We had a plan to hit the San Diego Zoo today (Sunday), but we all decided to take the “day off”. We all needed to recharge after being on the go for the last 5 days. Plus we have such a great place we wanted take advantage of the pool and beach. I definitely needed it…feeling pretty worn out today.

So, going to enjoy a relaxing day and then we will head to the Zoo, Safari Park and Legoland the next three days. Although I think I could just chill here for the next three or three hundred days too… 🙂

“Surfing will change your life, swear to god” ( Hahahaha, I could quote Point Break all day!!!)

On top of it!

I hate Chemo. Make no mistake – it sucks. However, this cocktail is definitely not as hard on me. And I have gotten better at managing it.

Its day 3 post chemo today and I am actually typing in my blog. Not much health to report since my last blog. I thought I would just expand on my weight. During the first 4 months of chemo I would drop to 137/138 pounds and then struggle to get up to 145 for my next round of chemo. This was a combination of my diet, the two day prior fasting and higher toxicity of the drugs I was taking.

I have been less concerned about the diet and I no longer fast before my chemo. It is about trying different things in the hopes something works. And it is not just about beating cancer but also getting the quality of life while doing it. I still try to eat well, but I am less strict on things and I don’t stay away from anything if I feel like eating or drinking it. – In moderation of course…

As I mentioned before my mental state has been pretty good too. We have been trying to get away here and there and I find that when one vacation is planned, I am already thinking about the next one. We have a california adventure we have been planning for a while and it is almost here. However, I am already thinking past it to have something else to look forward to. That “looking forward” to something has been a huge help for me.

Heading out next week with my parents and sister’s family to Disneyland and San Diego for two weeks. I pushed back chemo another week to do this. Its anyone’s guess if this is a good thing or bad thing. But I don’t want to just be on chemo and focusing on my disease. No one knows how much time I have – so I will enjoy what I can. I am also trying to get out a little more – meeting with friends, going into work. A little routine is shining a light back into our home.

When we get back I will have 3 rounds of chemo in June and then another scan. If all shows well, I am going to take 4 weeks off chemo in July. If it shows REALLY well, maybe even more!!! 🙂 But I don’t want to get my hopes up too much. Plans change quickly in my situation.

On a life note, my family is doing great. Renee has been doing her amazing juggling act running our household and Audrey is 4 going on 10 I think. And she has also surpassed her father as the worlds slowest person when it comes to getting ready. You all know how great I am at it – well she makes me seem fast. Hilarious and frustrating at the same time, but I guess I deserve it!

Renee is getting busier with her weddings and events (its that time of year) and Audrey has lots going on too. Soccer, Gymnastics, Dance, Music and swimming. Not really uncommon for kids but it does make for a busy schedule.

Finally had to bite the bullet and have the shingles replaced at our house. I have pushed it back the last two years, but there is no avoiding this year. Also having some of the old windows replaced. There is mould inside them and they just look crappy. I am afraid to open them…

Anyway, even though it poured rain today it wasn’t snow. Feel pretty good and getting excited for our trip Tuesday. Thanks for comments and messages. I appreciate and enjoy reading them. Will update with pics of our trip when I can.

Slow it down,

Dan

I suck…

I don’t know why I am so bad a updating the blog. I like doing it, so I am not sure what my problem is….

Phoenix was great. I attached a few pictures at the bottom. We had a great place to stay so lots of time spent in the pool. We also made it to a baseball game, golfed, mini-golfed and had a nice walk through the Desert Botanical Garden (http://www.dbg.org). The garden had a really amazing blown glass exhibition from artist Dale Chihuly.

For the most part Phoenix was pretty relaxing but I do like fun distractions. I have been able to relax a little more lately, but I still find I need to be engaged to take my mind off the pain and dark thoughts.

As far as health, I have been feeling quite good. Weight has been pretty steady around 150-153. I had a chemo round the day after we got back and I have another session on Wednesday this week. I met with the Radio-Oncologist last week about the stereotactic body radiation. Unfortunately, I am still not a candidate for this. I have too many lesions in my liver for this to be successful. Even with this more precise radiation it still takes 3 times the area you are trying to destroy. So basically for a 1cm spherical lesion he will destroy a 3cm spherical area. So to go after 10 lesions it will destroy too much of my healthy liver tissue. If I was to get to a point where I only had 1 or 2 lesions then it is possible. But that is pretty much the answer to any local (liver directed) treatments I have looked into.

They said they could radiate 1 or 2 if they were causing pain, but this is only considered palliative. I am definitely not there yet and I told him I hope I never see him again. (Unless I only have 1 or 2 lesions left of course…) I wasn’t overly discouraged – I don’t think I was really expecting it to be an answer. But it would have been nice to have more options…

I also started some anti-depressants the beginning of April. I went on a drug called Wellbutrin. Doc told me it would take about 3 weeks to start noticing any effects. Well, within a week I started to notice my irritability was a little more prominent. Then about 4 days into our Phoenix trip I started to get some anxiety and panic attacks and for no reason. Usually, if my headspace is muddled it is because I am thinking about something related to my cancer. This time, these attacks came out of the blue. And, I didn’t think about it at first but these attacks started around the 3 week mark. Coincidence?

I also slept less. This was an active anti-depressant, which is what I need, but it affected my sleeping too much. I would be wide awake at 5:30am and trying to get to bed was also a challenge. But what really freaked me out was the flight back to Calgary. About an hour into the flight I started to find it difficult to breath. Asthmatics say it feels like breathing through a straw. This was exactly the same for me. It was like I had to force the air in and then out. So being on a plane and feeling like this, I started to panic. I finally took an Ativan which helped with the anxiety, but it didn’t help the breathing. It lasted the rest of the night and by the next morning I was fine. So I looked up Wellbutrin side effects and some of the main ones were – anxiety/panic attacks, difficulty breathing and sleep disorders. Then I searched Chemotherapy with Wellbutrin and 5 drugs came up as potentials to enhance the side effects of Wellbutrin. Guess what one of the drugs were? Irinotecan – one of the main ones they are giving me right now. So with the side effects and my new found info, I stopped taking them. I wasn’t on full dose and Wellbutrin is a drug you can stop cold turkey.

I met with my psychiatrist later that week and told him I was going to hold off on the daily anti-depressants for now. I don’t get down every day (or much at all to be honest) and if I do get a little anxious he gave me a prescription for Ativan. So we will see how this goes for now. If things change we can always try a different drug. Plus I really hate taking any drugs and I am fully loaded with this Chemo crap.

Anyway, daily activities are starting to creep back in too. It feels good to care about something again. Still have many moments of “this f’n sucks” but doing some projects and doing a little work feels good. I am still nervous that things could change quickly though.

My mom and sister are in Mexico this week for my cousin Kayla’s wedding. Would have liked to have gone but with Chemo schedule and a small fear of the Mexican health system it wasn’t to be. Creating memories with family and friends is very important to me now. Would have liked to create those memories with my extended family but I am happy my mom and sister are there. All the best to the happy couple and I can’t wait to see some pictures.

Off to bed now, meeting my Oncologist in the morning for the usual pre-chemo follow up!
